Breast Augmentation Creams and Supplements

February 13, 2013 - Rhys Branman, MD
Nope, they don't work. RealSelf.com, the Mayo Clinic and Dr. Susan Love all agree. Let's take these sources one by one. Dr. Susan Love reports that consumerlab.com stated, "There is no evidence that any of the current dietary supplements marketed for breast enhancement are effective or that the science they use to support their claims is credible." Dr. Love has been a reliable source of information about women's health for decades. She has written extensively on menopause, breast cancer, and other women's issues. In fact, the Dr. Susan Love Research Foundation has a marvelous blog called Act With Love to...

Little Rock Cosmetic Surgery Center Reports on a New Breast Cancer Study

February 11, 2013 - Rhys Branman, MD
A new study that was published in the journal Breast Cancer Research and Treatment has shown that there may be a correlation between waiting to have children and a reduced risk of getting the worst kind of breast cancer. The rare and aggressive form of breast cancer called "triple-negative" occurs most often in African American women. In previous studies, indications have point to a reduced chance of breast cancer in women who have had a child and breast fed. Particularly estrogen positive breast cancers. Breast feeding also seems to reduce the risk of this especially virulent form of breast cancer,...

Maintaining Liposuction Results

February 8, 2013 - Rhys Branman, MD
Exercising is the most important factor in maintaining your results from liposuction. After liposuction, at Little Rock Cosmetic Surgery Center, you can begin light exercise after 2-3 weeks, but it is important that you give yourself time to heal for best results. For best results do not attempt to go back to a strenuous work out until at least 4 -6 weeks after your surgery. Always discuss this with the surgeon, and always listen to your body! It may even take about 6 to 9 months for all the numbness and swelling to completely go away after liposuction, but exercise...

Oh My Aching Feet! Bunionplasty?

February 6, 2013 - Rhys Branman, MD
Yet another cosmetic foot surgery! At least what is being called "Bunionplasty" seems as if it might be more called for than toe shortening! Cosmetic foot surgery is on the rise, but the American Orthopedic Foot and Ankle Society doesn't think most of these surgeries are very safe or healthy. What causes bunions? A deformity of the metatarsophalangeal (MTP) joint at the base of the big toe causes instability of the joint. This in turn can restrict motion or make motion of the big toe painful. And yes, ladies, wearing narrow-toed high heels can cause this! So can diabetes, some...

Cupid’s Bow

February 1, 2013 - Rhys Branman, MD
Valentine's Day is coming around again, that day when red hearts and kissable lips are presented with abandon on cards and decorations. First acknowledged by the ancient Romans, Valentine's Day was a holiday ruled by Cupid, the son of the Goddess Venus. Famous for his bow and his sharp aim at the human heart, Cupid would cause people to fall in love when shot with his golden arrows. But Cupid's Bow has lent its name to a part of the anatomy thanks to William Shakespeare. Can you guess which one? No, not the heart, the delicate border of the upper...

Be Wary, You May Be Risking More Than Your Wallet

January 30, 2013 - Rhys Branman, MD
Scientific American magazine has reported a very scary story. If you think the dangers of trendy new procedures only risk your wallet, think again. With the recent discovery of the existence of stem cells in adipose fat, there are now "stem cell face lifts" being offered. The idea is that these adult stem cells, from your own transplanted fat, will improve the skin quality and encourage growth of the underlying tissues to produce more cells filling out folds and wrinkles. Hence the non surgical face lift. Never mind that there is no scientific evidence of this thus far. Don't forget...

Breast Augmentation and Quality of Life

- Rhys Branman, MD
Breast augmentation is the most frequent surgical cosmetic procedure in the United States. One might ask if this type of surgery truly improves the quality of life for the women who elect to have their breast size increased. How do we find out? Research developed to measure quality of life (QOL) has historically depended upon objective and subjective criteria. For instance, the World Health Organization Quality of Life instruments contain four major domains which are: physical, psychological, social relationships and environment. Most methods include self report survey questionnaires that individuals  respond to. The questionnaires are studied for validity and reliability.  Measuring...

Couples & Families & Cosmetic Surgery

January 28, 2013 - Rhys Branman, MD
Years ago I performed cosmetic surgery on a mother and son. Actually you can watch the Little Rock Cosmetic Surgery, Date Line NBC show of this mother/son surgery, on my website. I mention this because there seems to be a trend now of couples, mothers and daughters, and other related individuals to seek cosmetic surgery in tandem. This trend has increased at least 37% since I performed the surgeries that were documented by NBC. 65-year-old Lynda and her 38-year-old daughter Stefanie, of Los Angeles, underwent different cosmetic surgeries this year and found support in recovering together. Good Morning America reported...

How Long Does a Facelift Last?

January 21, 2013 - Rhys Branman, MD
That question is asked by almost every one of my patients who come to me for face lift surgery at Little Rock Cosmetic Surgery Center. The honest answer used to be: it varies. Not anymore though. Now cosmetic surgeons can help patients have even more realistic and accurate expectations. Recently a study reported that 50 photographs of face lift patients were scrutinized by researchers in order to analyze just that, how long a face lift lasts. The face lift patients whose photos were examined had face lift surgery 5 and 1/2 years before. The researchers looked at three specific sets...

For The Men

January 18, 2013 - Rhys Branman, MD
Although I do not do this particular procedure at Little Rock Cosmetic Surgery Center, I found this trend interesting. Although I am a little late recognizing it, I was also interested in the charity organization called Movember that is becoming a worldwide movement. Just as there is a National Breast Cancer Awareness Month in October, men have seized November for prostate cancer awareness. Movember is the month men grow moustaches to raise money and promote awareness about prostate and testicular cancer. The new trend for men seems to be the mustache implant! In the Arab world a moustache is a...
