Breast Lift and Breast Augmentation Combined

November 2, 2020 - Rhys Branman, MD

A study performed between the years of 2005 and 2009 concluded that breast augmentation at the same time as a breast lift is indeed safe. Mastopexy, or breast lift, is often sought by older women who have experienced the effects of gravity, and women who have had children and breastfed. However, women who had smaller breasts to begin with often request breast augmentation too. The study reported by the journal of Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery has released the results this January.

The study compared women who underwent the combination of the two procedures with women who only had breast lift surgery. The results were not significantly different. Women who only had breast lift surgery had a 10 percent revision rate, while women who had the combined surgeries had a 13 percent revision rate. Most of the revisions were related to problems with the implants themselves. A number of different techniques can be used to perform a breast lift; the proper technique is largely dependent on the severity of breast sagging. During breast lift surgery, excess skin is removed from around the areola and the bottom of the breast, to tighten and lift the breast and nipple into a more attractive position. The nipple and areola are often moved to a higher position, typically in a location that is even with the breast crease. However, often there are asymmetries that can be corrected by combining a breast lift with breast augmentation. The lift itself will correct for the shape, contour and nipple position, while the breast augmentation will make the breast fuller.

Because of the technical skill required by the cosmetic surgeon, combining the procedures have been questioned in the past. Now we have this study that confirms that yes, the two procedures do not carry any more significant risk than either surgery on its own. In fact, breast augmentation is the most common procedure requested and therefore has a huge success rate. Another bonus is the money saved by having both procedures at the same time, not to mention reducing the risk of having yet another surgical procedure. At Little Rock Cosmetic Surgery Center, breast augmentation and breast lifts have been performed for many years, so call and set up your consultation if you are interested.
