New Trend for Nipples?

July 17, 2013 - Rhys Branman, MD
There appears to be a new trend in cosmetic surgery. It's called "Tittooing." Again, in the United Kingdom, it has become a fad for darkening, or defining the nipples. Not only that, but sometimes the nipples are tattooed into shapes like stars! The procedure is about $1500.00 to $2,000.00 to top it all off. It is being called a nipple movement. Gail Proudman is a clinician in Liverpool who is doing this procedure for at least three women a week. For some reason, the tittoo only lasts for 12 to 18 months. Shockingly, the May issue of the British magazine...

Tummy Tucks Can Help You Emotionally

July 15, 2013 - Rhys Branman, MD
Abdominoplasty is one of the most popular procedures among women who have given birth and have decided not to have any more children, and people who have had bariatric or gastric bypass surgery. Often performed as part of a "Mommy Makeover," the tummy tuck, like any surgery can make a person nervous. Psychologically speaking, it is normal to be nervous about surgery.  You may think your brain has gone offline, so to speak after committing to abdominoplasty. Many women describe being in an adrenaline haze until the surgery is over, they sometimes feel depressed until at about three weeks after...

Round or Anatomically Shaped Breast Implants?

July 12, 2013 - Rhys Branman, MD
Remember the BREAST-Q? I wrote about this new survey instrument a while back that measured women's satisfaction and quality of life in relation to having breast augmentation. The developer of this instrument has recently published another study to find out if women preferred round or shaped breast implants. Over the years, silicone breast implants have improved. Now-a-days, as a cohesive gel there is much less of a possibility for leakage from a silicone implant. This is how safe the new silicone implants are. So then the question is always what shape. The fourth generation silicone breast implants are often rounder....

Let’s Talk About IPL

July 10, 2013 - Rhys Branman, MD
Non invasive procedures have become very popular with cosmetic surgery patients. Intense Pulsed Light is a non invasive treatment that improves your skin. It is also known as photorejuvenation, photofacial, intelligent pulsed light, or Broad Band Light, BBL. This is a photo facial that removes mild but annoying skin imperfections on your face, neck, hands, chest or legs. We offer IPL at Little Rock Cosmetic Surgery Center to eradicate some of these flaws from your complexion: Melasma - that patchy brown discoloration that can occur during pregnancy Port Wine Stains - those deep red birthmarks Broken capillaries - also known...

Where Have Beauty Marks Gone & Are These Moles Dangerous?

July 8, 2013 - Rhys Branman, MD
Remember beauty marks, those small dark spots on the face, neck or shoulders that women used to covet? Did they go out of fashion? Over the centuries those small, black or brown delicate moles have held allure, superstitions, and myths about health. When popular they have even been drawn, painted, or tattooed on to suggestive places on women's bodies. When unpopular they have been removed, sometimes rationalized as unhealthy or a mark of evil. Whether these small moles are dangerous not only depends on their composition apparently, but when and where you have one, historically speaking that is. A harmless...

Liposuction Techniques Now & Then

July 5, 2013 - Rhys Branman, MD
Let's talk about the basics of liposuction. Most people have a vague idea about the definition, that is liposuction is a way to remove fat from under the skin using a suction device. Yep, that's it. Liposuction, also called liposculpture, lipoplasty, or suction lipectomy is used to remove adipose or subcutaneous fat, the fat just under a person's skin. What people may not know is how and why the basic techniques of liposuction are used. What is tumescent liposuction anyway, you might ask. Liposuction was developed in the early 1970s in Italy. This original type of liposuction is now known...

Controversy Over Treatment for Gynecomastia in Teens

July 1, 2013 - Rhys Branman, MD
It is not only women who seek cosmetic surgery. And it is not only women who worry about the size of their breasts. While some teenage girls may struggle through school and other social functions lacking self-esteem due to overly large or small breasts, it turns out that boys also face jeering and the consequent alienation due to breast growth, gynecomastia. About half of all teenage boys develop it to some degree during puberty. In most cases, it does not progress to the point of being noticeable. However, in those cases that gynecomastia does become noticeable, it also causes noticeable...

Liposuction and Your Heart

June 28, 2013 - Rhys Branman, MD
Liposuction is one of the most popular cosmetic surgery procedures performed around the world. While it has recently been reported that abdominal liposuction can trigger an increase in visceral fat, the fat that is around organs, especially the liver, this can be compensated for. Liposuction removes only subcutaneous fat, but visceral fat, is significantly more dangerous than subcutaneous fat. Visceral fat has been correlated with heart disease. However, the Journal of Clinical Endocrinology and Metabolism has reported that the increase of visceral fat can be prevented with exercise! The study that provided the evidence for this included 36 women who...

Mindful Eating

June 24, 2013 - Rhys Branman, MD
We all know by now there is an obesity problem in the United States. People are eating junk food and too much of it. This is terribly unhealthy and often what drives patients to seek liposuction. The problem is that liposuction is not a weight loss tool. Generally it is not very helpful to perform liposuction for obese people. Your cosmetic surgeon will tell you to lose weight, and try to get close to your ideal weight before liposuction. Of course this is not easy at all. It means changing your diet and exercising. It is a vicious circle for...
