The next big thing in beauty: Salmon Sperm

“Salmon-sperm” is creating buzz in the beauty industry, why? Research shows that salmon sperm shares similarities with DNA found in human placentas, giving it a gold star for its abilities. Not only does the term “salmon sperm” have a shock factor, but it works! Some of these benefits include stimulating collagen production, promoting tissue regeneration, and reducing inflammation.

What is PDRN?

PDRN stands for Polydeoxyribonucleotide, a DNA fragment derived from the sperm cells of salmon, trout, or chum salmon. The DNA fragments go through a purification process allowing for the recovery of more than 95% of pure substances, thus guaranteeing the absence of inflammatory responses. Polynucleotides have been used in medicine for wound healing, but it is only recently we have started to incorporate it more in aesthetics.

How PDRN benefits the skin

Skin is our largest organ and is extraordinarily complex. The outermost layer is the epidermis, then the dermis followed by subcutaneous tissue and muscle. Fibroblast, Collagen, Elastin and Hyaluronic Acid are all located in the dermis, making that our target. Dermal fibroblasts serve as the building blocks of collagen. Polynucleotides promote the growth & activity of fibroblasts, restoring skin’s glow, hydration and improving skin texture.

Choosing a PDRN Provider

There are multiple companies with varying formulations of PDRN and they are not all created equal. Salmon derived is considered the benchmark due to its close resemblance to human DNA, and has been researched for years. Some are sourced from plants like ginger, which is a good alternative for those that are vegan, but has had limited studies to back it up. Remember that any formulation you choose must reach the skin’s dermis for the best results. Naturally, PDRN’s molecular size is too large to penetrate the epidermis, so you (with your professional skincare provider) will have to create a channel for it to pass through. Here at Exhale Med Spa, we administer PDRN with microneedling, but there are other options such as laser or mesotherapy.
