Does it matter what brand of breast implant I get?

When you’re planning your breast augmentation, you’ll quickly discover that there are several breast implant manufacturers to choose from. This naturally leads to questions: Is one brand safer than the others? Will a certain brand give better results? Should you request a specific manufacturer?

We’re here to help you understand what really matters when it comes to breast implant brands. The brand name matters far less than you might think, and your choice of surgeon will have a much bigger impact on your results and experience.

Dr. Branman Uses MENTOR Breast Implants

At the Cosmetic Surgery Center, board-certified cosmetic surgeon and breast augmentation specialist Dr. Rhys Branman has been performing breast augmentation for over 30 years, and he exclusively uses breast implants from MENTOR.

MENTOR has been manufacturing breast implants for over 30 years and is one of the most established names in the industry. Unlike some manufacturers, MENTOR focuses exclusively on breast implants and tissue expanders, specializing in this specific area of aesthetic medicine. All MENTOR products sold in the US are made in America, and they produce both silicone and saline breast implants:

  • Their silicone implant lines include MemoryGel, MemoryGel Xtra, and MemoryShape.
  • They offer saline options like the SPECTRUM implant.

Dr. Branman’s extensive experience with the full range of the manufacturer’s options allows him to guide you in choosing the right implants for your goals.

What breast implant brands have in common

All FDA-approved breast implant manufacturers offer similar safety profiles and a wide range of options. Every major breast implant brand provides:

  • Size variety ranging from approximately 100 to 800 cubic centimeters (ccs)
  • Both silicone and saline options with soft silicone outer shells
  • Multiple profile choices including high profile (greater projection, narrower base), moderate profile, and low profile (wider base, less projection)
  • Round and shaped (anatomical) implants to suit different body types and goals
  • Different cohesivity levels for silicone implants, from softer gel to firmer “gummy bear” consistency
  • Product warranties in case of device failure

Why do patients and surgeons have brand preferences?

If all brands are similar, why do some people seem to prefer one over another?

For patients

Many patients develop a brand preference based on familiarity. Maybe a friend or family member had great results with a particular brand, or they’ve seen that brand name mentioned frequently online. Some patients see stunning before and after photos and assume the brand of implant is what created those results.

While it’s completely normal to have preferences, it’s important to understand that no one can tell what brand of implant you have just by looking at your results. The artistry and skill of your cosmetic surgeon, combined with choosing the right implant specifications for your body, is what creates beautiful outcomes.

For surgeons

Cosmetic surgeons typically choose brands based on factors like:

  • Consistent quality and safety record
  • Range of sizes and profiles available
  • Customer service and support for medical practices
  • Years of proven reliability in the market

At the Cosmetic Surgery Center in Little Rock, we work with trusted manufacturer MENTOR whose products we’ve used successfully for years. We choose breast implants to offer based on quality and reliability, not marketing.

What you should know about implant recalls

Safety is always our top priority, so let’s address the topic of recalls.

In 2019, Allergan voluntarily recalled their “Biocell” textured breast implants after research suggested a possible link between this particular highly textured surface and a very rare type of cancer called breast implant-associated anaplastic large cell lymphoma (BIA-ALCL).

It’s important to understand that this recall was specific to Biocell’s unique macro-textured surface. Not all textured implants carry the same concerns, and the degree of texturing appears to influence risk. Since the recall, there has been increased research into implant surface technology, and manufacturers continue to develop and refine different surface options.

At the Cosmetic Surgery Center, we use only FDA-approved breast implants that have an excellent safety profile and can achieve beautiful, natural-looking results for our patients.

Implant brands are far less important than choosing an experienced, skilled cosmetic surgeon who listens to your goals and has the expertise to achieve them.

How we help choose the right implants for you

During your breast augmentation consultation at the Cosmetic Surgery Center, we focus on understanding your goals and your unique anatomy rather than starting with a specific brand preference. We’ll discuss:

  1. Your aesthetic goals. Are you looking for subtle enhancement or more dramatic results? A natural look or fuller appearance?
  2. Your body proportions. We’ll take detailed measurements to determine what sizes and profiles will look balanced and proportionate on your frame.
  3. Your lifestyle. Your activity level and daily routine can influence which implant options are best. (Read our post about life with breast implants for more on this.)
  4. Implant placement. Whether submuscular (under the muscle) or subglandular (over the muscle) placement is ideal for you.
  5. Fill material. The differences between silicone and saline, and which might feel more natural for your goals.

You’ll have the opportunity to see and feel actual implant samples, and we’ll use sizers during your breast augmentation consultation so you can visualize how different options will look on your body. This hands-on approach helps remove the guesswork and gives you confidence in your decisions.

In 2014 Dr. Branman did my first breast augmentation and did the most amazing and beautiful job, so naturally, when I wanted to get larger implants this year I went back to him for my second augmentation. I will never go to any other plastic surgeon. His work is absolutely fabulous and flawless.”
