Removal of Sun Damage, Veins and Other Discolorations

If you have lived an outdoor life and enjoyed the sunshine in many ways: hiking, swimming, skiing, or just plain sunbathing, you may have large areas of sun damage. This isn't necessarily a cause for concern these days, especially if you live in the Little Rock, Arkansas area.

Our new Sciton laser at The Cosmetic Surgery Center in Little Rock is an ideal device for treating large areas of sun damage. Why?

  • Because it has a wider beam than usual, so it can treat larger areas more quickly
  • It beams the light through a very effective cooling plate, which means your skin is not harmed by excessive heat
  • It is more easily adjustable than many other laser systems, and will be used at setting appropriate for your skin type

Vein treatment

This Sciton laser treats not only sun damage, hair removal, and other skin conditions, but also those veins that become visible on the skin as we age. It works on veins the same way it works on hair removal: its light is absorbed by pigment. In the case of vein treatment, the laser light is absorbed by the pigment in blood. The secret of its success is in its wavelength.

Older laser treatments of veins were less effective because the laser's wavelength was too short, so that its light energy was largely absorbed by the skin's pigment. Instead, the Sciton's beam can penetrate the skin, bypassing that pigment, and be absorbed by the red pigment in the blood. Since the beam passes through a computer-controlled cooling plate, it does not harm the skin.

As well as having a longer wavelength, the Sciton laser has a faster pulse, so that each tiny pulse of light lasts only a few thousandths of one second! That means the light energy is not wasted by being spread over the skin, but goes directly to the blood in the vein. The vein is thus heated, which clots the blood, and leads to closure of the vein and its gradual reabsorption. In this way, vascular lesions, broken capillaries, spider veins, and larger veins can all be successfully treated.

Because the Sciton has an adjustable beam, we can use it to treat veins of different sizes. Each vein treatment is entirely customized to the size, depth, and color of the veins. As with laser hair removal, more pigment in the skin creates competition with the pigment in the vein or hair root, and with older lasers this eliminated more people as candidates for vein or hair removal.

The Sciton laser is better designed for penetrating beneath the skin surface, so this is less of a problem. But it's still a good idea to avoid any skin tanning before a vein treatment.

Skin discolorations

If you would like to remove any skin discoloration, the Sciton laser can do it easily. We will customize your treatment, setting the laser to match the treatment depth needed, and you will feel little or no discomfort. That's because the laser light is directed first through an effective cooling screen, so that no excessive heat can hurt the skin.

The skin care treatment will last for about 30 minutes, and before it starts, we will apply a topical anesthetic to the area, and leave it to soak in well, for about an hour. Afterwards, the skin will be red and may feel as if it's a bit sunburned. We'll give you some ointment to help with that, and a cooling pack will also be helpful. After about three days, the redness will subside and you can use make-up again after four to seven days.
