“Magic Bullet” Breast Implants In the News

Woman Covering Breasts Photo - Cosmetic Surgery CenterHere’s some amazing news! It almost sounds like science fiction. There is a researcher in Akron, Ohio who is trying to develop a breast implant that detects and cures cancer! Recently, Dr. Judit E. Puskas at the University of Akron College of Engineering has decided to make her research public in order to raise money for her ambitious cause. At the very minimum, her research could impact the future of breast augmentation by reducing chances of infection after surgery.

This is a threefold idea:

1. To develop a drug-emitting polymer coating for breast implants. As you know now the casing of breast implants is made of silicone. Puskas is working on FDA approval for a casing made of polymer and states that drugs that reduce inflammation and fight infection could be released locally from the breast implant rather than taking them orally.

2. A longer term goal is to develop a whole new line of implants made of such polymers to be used instead of traditional chemotherapy. The implant would deliver the drugs directly to the site, rather than being injected systemically, thus reducing many side effects.

3. Included in this is the development and testing of a polymer based “Magic Bullet” drug that can help to detect cancer cells!

Pretty amazing news I’d say! Part of this is due to the huge polymer manufacturing industry in Akron, Ohio. Several nonprofit organizations and individuals have helped fund this research so far. but Dr. Puska needs at least $2 million to continue her work. Read more about award winning project.

We look forward to such mind boggling developments here at Little Rock Cosmetic Surgery Center. Remember, as it stands now, research has shown that silicone implants do not cause or contribute to cancer in any way. But wouldn’t it be amazing if there was a cancer curing breast implant?
