Laser Hair Removal

Laser Hair Removal is one of our most popular cosmetic procedures.  It’s a simple process that can remove the need for waxing, shaving, or plucking of unwanted body hair.

How Many Treatments are Necessary?

Because hair growth is cyclical, laser hair removal requires several visits to obtain a satisfactory result.  In a given area of the body, not all of the hairs are at the same phase of growth at the same time. Laser hair removal will treat the active hair follicles, but not the inactive ones.  Subsequent treatments will target the remaining hair follicles until (ideally) all follicles have been shut down.

That means that you will need five or six treatments, perhaps more, depending on how dense and thick the hair growth is that is being targeted. The interval of time between treatments will vary somewhat according to the body area being treated. For the chin area, for example, it would be about four weeks. For legs, it would be six to eight weeks.

Who can benefit from Laser Hair Removal?

It was once the case that people with gray or fair hair could not benefit from laser hair removal – only those with dark hair and fair skin were treated.  This was because of short wavelength lasers that could not penetrate the skin deep enough, so the skin pigment would absorb the laser light rather than the hair follicle.

Now, our cosmetic Sciton laser is able to penetrate deeper and treat people of various skin types and hair colors.

It's still true that people with gray or blond hair respond less well to laser hair removal than people with darker hair. But each case is unique. It will help if your skin is not tanned. If you have light-colored hair, don't assume that you're not a good candidate. Call or email us for a complimentary laser hair removal consultation, and Dr. Branman can determine how well you might respond to a treatment.
