Getting Beach Ready Calls for More Than Hitting the Gym - Wednesday, May 07, 2008
More Women and Men use Downtime in the Spring to Receive Cosmetic SurgeryChicago, IL (April 16, 2008) - As the summer months approach, so does the desire to look good in that swimsuit. Many Americans these days are choosing to receive cosmetic surgery in early spring in order to ready themselves for the beach.
"Spring is definitely the peak activity for liposuction. Patients know that it takes weeks and months for the swelling to resolve and plan their procedures accordingly," said AACS President, Steven Hopping, M.D., of Washington D.C.
"There is always an upswing with breast augmentation in the spring," said Angelo Cuzaline, M.D., D.D.S., an AACS Trustee from Tulsa. "It begins with college students during spring break and steadily increases through early May for women of all ages. Liposuction is also a highly sought out procedure at the beginning of April, year after year."
Additionally, the average age of women who are receiving these beach ready procedures is increasing. According to the American Academy of Cosmetic Surgery 2007 Procedural Survey, since 2002 the mean age of patients seeking the top ten most performed invasive procedures has increased by two years. The average age of a female patient receiving liposuction has increased by three years to 41, while breast augmentation has increased by two years now up to 33. "People want to look the age that they feel, especially at the beach," adds Cuzalina.
This trend does not just include women. Men are opting to get such procedures as sclerotherapy, the removal of spider veins, in order to show off their summer legs. Male sclerotherapy has increased by 226% since 2002, proving that men are becoming just as aware of what they look like in a swimsuit as women.
"Especially before the summer months, sclerotherapy is a popular procedure for men and women," said Dee Anna Glaser, M.D., an AACS Trustee from St. Louis. "Laser hair removal is also something people want done before the summer tan season."

Cosmetic Surgery Center First To Bring New Injectable Cosmetic Treatment To Arkansas - Monday, November 19, 2007
We are very excited to bring Sculptra to Arkansas as we strive to provide patients with the highest quality, most technologically-advanced procedures.Sculptra is a new injectable cosmetic treatment, which rejuvenates facial volume in both men and women. Sculptra is intended for patients who want to provide youth-enhancing contours of their face. Unlike other filler materials used for fine lines and wrinkles, Sculptra can be used for large areas of volume loss previously reserved for fat grafts or larger surgical procedures.
This amazing product builds collagen over a three-to-six month period and clinical studies have shown that the results of Sculptra can last for more than two years or longer. Results are a more youthful, natural look without surgery. Sculptra is composed of a synthetic material containing skin-smoothing micro-particles to help lift and smooth deep folds between the nose and mouth, sunken cheeks, sagging skin, wrinkles, creases and scars. The injectable works by stimulating the build up of the body's natural collagen to help smooth out lines and wrinkles. Sculptra is very well tolerated, having been used by surgeons for more than 10 years. More than 150,000 treatments have been administered worldwide since 1999, including 17,000 in the United Kingdom since 2005.
A New Design for the Facelift Procedure - Sunday, September 30, 2007
Many people have asked me about the SMARTLIFT facial procedure and how it can help them. So I would like to take this moment to explain this procedure in more detail. The SMARTLIFT is an improvement on the standard facelift procedure. In the past, standard facelifts only addressed the skin of the face and jowls leaving the underlying muscle and tissue alone. What we have found is that many of the problems associated with facial aging occur with sagging in the muscles, surrounding tissues and not just the skin. In order to achieve an excellent result one must address these layers as well.
The SMARTLIFT addresses all these problems and more. What is so amazing about this procedure is it directly addresses the sagging neck and the underlying muscles by placing them back into their original positions so that the patient ends up with a more youthful appearance. When combined with specialized suturing technique and removal of redundant loose tissue the results can be truly amazing. In addition, this procedure can also be easily combined with a mid-face lift and forehead lift. In addition, many of my patients, if needed, elect to perform eyelid surgery at the same time in order to achieve complete facial rejuvenation.
Many examples of these combinations of procedures can be seen on our website under our facelift photographs section. Also don't forget to view our facial rejuvenation segment on Dateline NBC. I hope this answers many of the questions I have received over the last few months. We look forward to seeing many of you in our office for your complimentary consultation.
Beware of Medi-Spas - Thursday, August 09, 2007
The increase in medispas has been accompanied by a jump in reported problems. A 2003 survey of dermatologists showed a 41% increase in Medispa related problems since 2001.Although Medispas have a basic allure, in order to be profitable many hire improperly trained staff and don't have a Doctor who is present to evaluate patients.
Unfortunately, the public at large thinks that many non-surgical treatments have minimal to no complications. This can be very far from the truth. In the wrong or inexperienced hands many of these treatments can cause permanent scarring.
In order to protect yourself the facility one attends should be staffed by a full time physician and all staff members who operate light based systems should be certified. Injectables such as Botox or Restylane should either be administered by a nurse or Physician.
Abdominoplasty vs Liposuction - Monday, August 06, 2007
Many patients come to me requesting Liposuction of the abdomen but really are candidates for Abdominoplasty. So how does a patient figure out what they need? Some things to consider are as follows:First liposuction is best for small isolated areas with smooth overlying skin. The abdomen and waist areas are excellent for this if not too large and if you don't have loose skin.
If you have loose skin and fat on the stomach then you may be an abdominoplasty candidate. Abdominoplasty removes the loose skin, stretch marks as well as fat. Abdominoplasty also tightens the muscles below the skin.
One advantage of Liposuction is that the incisions are much smaller then abdominoplasty. However if your goal is to remove excess skin then abdominoplasty is the procedure of choice.
A free consultation in our office will also help clarify many of these issues.
