A Manly Month: Movember

Movember Poster Image - Little Rock Cosmetic SurgeryI promised myself I would remember that November has been claimed by men as Prostate Cancer Awareness Month last year. It’s only fair, women have October. I also found that the month was being called Movember because men in 21 countries were commemorating this by growing moustaches! Nick Offerman presented a comic video to help men grow their annual facial hair. Just as men support breast cancer awareness, many women support Movember. In fact, this has taken an interesting twist in the United Kingdom where some women grow their armpit hair in lieu of moustaches in sympathy!

Apparently, last year was the movement’s most successful year, raising 126.3 million dollars! Hopefully, some of this money will go to outreach because studies have shown that men are 100% less likely to go to visit the doctor for preventive care! Consequently, the real issue for men is not that there has not been enough updated, current research into prostate cancer, nor quality or availability of care, but instead a gender-specific habit of skipping annual physicals. According to the Center for Disease Control and Prevention, women go to get check-ups at a 56% higher rate than men!

So here’s an interesting caveat; men wanting cosmetic surgery must have their medical history assessed. If a man has not gone for yearly physicals, I will insist he does. We cannot perform surgery without an accurate medical history. In this way, the cosmetic surgeon is often a help in detecting other physical conditions a patient may not have been aware of. Many cosmetic surgeons are reporting that a full 20% of their patients are men now. However the truth is any man concerned enough to seek cosmetic procedures, probably tends to be one of the men who does get an annual examination. This is good news because you will not be a candidate for certain procedures if you are not in good health.

At Little Rock Cosmetic Surgery Center we have many male patients seeking procedures that range from noninvasive injections to liposuction to treatment for gynecomastia. Don’t be afraid to give us a call to set up your consultation if you are seeking cosmetic surgery.
